I have a free truncated version of Nero 9, which suits all my needs atm.
I had to get this from the Nero company when I upgraded to Vista, as my
previous paid for versions then failed to work.
The only nitpick I have with my truncated version of Nero 9 is that it won't
add files to a disc with files already on it.
It insists on either erasing the disc, ejecting the disc, or exiting the
program. This is no great hardship for me, however.

My Nero 9 tells me that there is now a version 10; I haven't yet
investigated further.
Has anyone experience with this? If so, details please, or even with the
full version of Nero 9.

Not sure about Nero 10, still using 8 here, but are you closing the disc -
this will prevent more files being written to it later.

Do you mean "finalizing the disc"? - no I am not doing that.
I am using DVD+RW or DVD-RW discs, which I think is implied by my "erasing
the disc..."

Then I have no idea sorry, that's the only thing I could think of.

I have heard about it but don't know anything about it.
Is it freeware?
I don't mind paying a reasonable amount, but I don't like paying money over
the Internet.

It is free on the internet, but hasn't been upgraded for a few years,
the person behind it was poached or something. The best software for
re-authoring DVDs, it has built in support for burning with Nero, which
seemed to disappear with Nero 8. It compresses and shrinks a large DVD,
which is okay, but I have read that something called ImgBurn gives a
better picture, and DVDFab seems to give a better result and
mysteriously uses a lot less computer power, but you have to pay for
DVDFab after the trial. DVDShrink is not ideal for removing some
titles, giving a few hundred megabytes behind for something large, but
that is only when retaining a full disc. I have discovered how to do
that with Vobblanker, which is also free. With vobblanker combined with
pgcedit, which has a large learning curve, you can reauthor a dvd into
two with the menus retained, or other possibilities.

Just watch out for dodgy copies (maybe trojans added, but I have never
found that) and avoid anything of DVDShrink with a price. I haven't
downloaded it for a long time, I have my own copy.

Many thanks for all that info, Globular.

However, I think I will stick with my Nero 9, in spite of all Nero's urgings
for me to upgrade.
As I've said, it does all I want it to atm.

Choose/don't choose "multi-session". Multi-session allows adding files
later (if there is room for them). No multi-session "closes" disk.
