When looking at prices for 101cm full HD LCD TV's, I notice a wide variation
in price, ranging from $1596 for a Toshiba to about $3500 or more for a
Samsung 200Hz LED LCD or Sony brands.

Any ideas as to which would be best value.

How much worse could the Toshiba be than the Samsung or Sony brand?

Thank you.

Problem is its very much personal choice and to a large extent depend on how
fussy you are..
At the high end you'll theoretically be getting blacker blacks, less motion
defects, more inputs and maybe some sort of internet access etc etc.
However if you don't need heaps of inputs, internet access and don't know
what blacker blacks are then you might save $2000.
For $1596 I'd probably go Sony over Toshiba

I agree Trev, but once you've spent a few years reading some of the posts on
this NG you'll come to appreciate that some here can't tell the difference
and even if they could they'd never admit to it. :-(

The old Blu-ray vs DVD ("....I've used DVD shrink and compressed a 3 hour
movie onto a single sided DVD-R....." line) picture and sound quality
argument is the flavour of the month and a classic example of the mentality
of some (but not all) that post here.

If I was in the market for buying a new TV I would probably comapare them at
a specialist AV dealer as distinct from a discount whitegoods store. The
former dealers sometimes go to the trouble to have the units calibrated for
optimum PQ (especially on the larger and more expensive models).
Unfortunately most manufacturer's "standard" PQ setting is never really
accurate, but having said that, other than a reduction in colour saturation
level my Sony X series Bravia was almost spot on when checked against the HD
Video Essentials Disc.

Cheers,
Alan

I went for a full HD LG 106cm 200Hz LCD TV, and I'm very happy with the
picture quality.
Full HD (1080i) is noticeably sharper than normal HD (720p).
I've yet to see anything at 1080p.
Has anyone seen it?
Also, I like the 3 year warranty LG provide.
I've extended it by 2 years to give a total of 5 years.
The total cost was $2390.
I was thinking of going with Samsung for a slightly better picture, but
their warranty is only 1 year and they only make 101cm.

I can now bypass the crappy component interface to my Sony DVPNS-728H DVD
player and enjoy excellent picture quality via a HDMI interface.
If you look at text via component, it all seems to have ghosting around the
outlines, but this distortion is not so noticeable on normal video.
Unfortunately, I still have to endure a component interface to my Topfield
SD PVR.
This is pushing me to upgrade to a HD PVR with a HDMI interface.

BTW, the HDMI cable cost me $80 while the DVD player cost $110!
The offer prices were $129 and $139.
I offered $80 and $110 and got them at Good Guys Auburn NSW!

Oh dear, then you got ripped off on the cable by about 800%..

Reminds me of some poor sod who I saw going through the checkout at Harvey
Norman who was paying $150 for a 1.5m Monster HDMI cable...

Yikes, anything over $15 for one that length is too much...
