Hi, I have a Pioneer BDP120 blu-ray player with HDMI output connected to
a friend's Panasonic television (model unknown) that identifies itself
when plugged into a pc as: EDID vendor "MEI", prod id 49451 and capable
of supporting 1920 * 1080 resolution.

I've tried some but not all combinations of order of turning the
television and blu-ray player on and connecting the HDMI cable between
them and starting to play a blu-ray disk from Japan (
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWBS-1078 ) that is
described as "Region Free" and 1080i resolution, but the television
keeps downgrading the resolution to 720i or 480i.

I can try another blu-ray disk some time but would be interested in
knowing of any tricks to get full resolution working between the blu-ray
player and television via HDMI.

The solution was easy - I bought a HDMI 1.3b cable ($25 from Jaycar),
switched off the television and blu-ray player, plugged the HDMI cable
in to both, switched on the television then half a minute or so later
switched on the blu-ray player, then on the set-up menus, changed output
from analogue and HDMI out to HDMI out, and all worked out fine.

It appears that the HDMI output is limited to 480p when analogue output
is enabled.
