When I'm watching a DVD, I find I can't hear it properly, even though
I've cranked up the volume controls on both TV and DVD. Sound levels
are fine when viewing live and VCR. Is there anything I can do to
correct this?

I can't really understand how levels can be so low.
But I would check the audio settings in the dvd player. You might be
able to vary the settings of the dynamic range.

I have seen this when viewing a 5.1 DVD through a stereo sound system.
I had to select downconvert in the DVD player so it mixed all the
channels to the two outputs I was using.

Correct ..!!you are missing the centre chanel sound most likely which has
the voices on it... so down mix to 2 channel ......you are probably
connected to the front L and R channels hence no voices..!!

This is a common and has to do with the dynamic range of the audio track. The best way
around it is a good A/V receiver that has "nightmode". Nightmode reduces the dynamic
range and makes the quiet bits louder and loud bits quieter.
