The HMV store in the Burke Street mall which has been there for at least
11-12 years, is closing on the 19th of Feb. They are having a 15% off
everything in the store at the moment- but I noticed certain DVD's have been
put up in price, so even with the 15% off, still too expensive.
It seems HMV are moving out of Australia(other stores in Melbourne have
closed in the last 2-3 years including Chadstone and Prahran), whilst the
Sydney City store closed last year???

Yep - same happening up here in Queensland - the Brisbane suburban
stores all disappeared a while ago, and now the CBD (Queen Street Mall)
shop is having a 'Sale' - looks like they are gonna bail out to me.

Oh BTW, their website has also disappeared. The site
http://www.hmv.com.au (which was HMV music stores Australia) has been
re-registered to a group for the purposes of "online club for High
Mobility and All Terrain Vehicle enthusiasts and owners."

It the old story of "mark it up, to mark it down"

The chances are at there lowest price, there still a lot dearer then the
local "Sanity Music' or " JB Hi-Fi" store so it's no wonder they've gone
broke. And no-one closes a business that's making money.

With their prices so highly inflated on everything they sell, it's a wonder
they lasted this long.......

Yes but that's common sense - that has no place in the Aus retail
market! Sanity has basically eliminated all serious competitors in
Australia, and just look at the result. No wonder almost everything I
buy now comes via online shopping (Amazon, eBay etc.).

You don't think they're a serious competitor? In Melbourne they would be
bigger than Sanity.

Yeah, true JBHiFi usually have a better range of titles, but they're
only in certain big areas, whereas Sanity tend to cover the smaller
regional areas as well. All the same, neither of them really cater to
anything but the most popular titles (I've in particular been including
music in this as well).

You've got to be joking.

JB Hi-Fi built its empire on its huge back catalogue range, and to this day
is THE place to go when you're looking for not just new releases, but stuff
that's been around for years as well.

Sanity, on the other hand, carries a range only marginally better than your
average Target store, all at massively inflated prices.

What do you think the rent would be on a prime CBD location where HMV is
located. I think they would have to inflate there prices just to pay the
rent.

JBHIFI relye more on selling quantity to boost there profit margin. Thats
why there prices are at times realy great. but I'm not sure how they work.
Sometimes I have found great cd's I've been after for a while that were
origionally priced at over $30 for ages and now they obviously have not sold
and been reduced to $9.95

That system worked really well for another store called Myers, and
probably lots of others. They had this thing called the Bargain Basement.

Yes, thousands of CBD workers, generally during their lunch breaks.

Just replying to some old messages seeing I've been away so long...

The mob that own Sanity bought HMV stores in Australia some time back.
To my knowledge they've closed them down, or have opened new stores
under the Sanity name.

I'd be surprised if one single HMV store exists any longer.

HMV used to be good in the early 90s, prices still seemed reasonable,
then they shoved prices up around 1993-1994 and that's when I stopped
shopping there.

Nevertheless today most of the people move their stuff by hiring a truck and thus move combined with the assistance of some pals or loved ones. Melbourne Cheap Movers Many of the people are oblivious about movers as well as packers and their value.
